Resolutions

A resolution is not just for the New Year. Resolution means to make a firm decision and the last time I checked we can do that any day we like, right?

The prospect of a shiny new year where anything can happen, you can be the person you've always wanted to become, achieve the goals you've always wanted to score, and finally live your dream life. Especially after 2020 everyone is ready for it to be over and bring in 2021.


However, will you wake up on the 1st of January and magically have everything you want? The New Years Fairy Godmother appears, and the world changes overnight? It's like fetch, it's not going to happen.

What will happen is many of us will wake up in the exact same world, with the same routines, and in the same lockdown. Then we'll decide that resolutions never work because midnight on the 31st will not turn COVID into a pumpkin.

Resolutions absolutely work. I can guarantee you've made them, whether positive or negative. Think back to something that you decided and never waivered. It may have been a choice related to nutrition or moving your body, it might have been removing yourself from a relationship or staying in one, changing your career or not, starting a hobby or not, and the list goes on. We make decisions every day and the strong ones are your resolutions. The 'rules' you create for yourself to live by.

While it is always possible to make a resolution on any random day throughout the year I imagine you're here because you're looking at making some right now. Start by working out what you stand for and what you are available for now.


Ask yourself questions such as:

  1. How has your life changed in 2020?

  2. What were my main pressure points in 2020?

  3. What was the biggest lesson I learned in 2020?


Then...

  1. What is my motivation to create change in 2021?

  2. What emotions would I like to experience more often? How can I create these emotions?

  3. What goals do I have not just for this year, but for life that makes me feel excited? What small steps can I make to achieve these goals?

In closing, what are your resolutions? Every day has the same potential as new years day to effect change. It won't all happen overnight but your resolution will start when you decide to make the change. Have patience with the process. 2021 is yours for the taking.
